I would love any advice on the pros/cons of different immunostainers. Mostly the Ventana system compared to the DAKO system. I work in a small lab, 3 histotechs and 3 pathologists. One of the techs I work with needs a relatively user friendly machine with as many pre-diluted solutions/antibodies as possible. I would also like it if someone could tell me if the retrieval method on the machine is worth the money, or if it is better to microwave with Citrate buffer is better. Bear in mind that this lab is not that advanced and sadly I am the one who is attempting to move it forward. Confused

PS. I do have literature from the companies about the products, but would love a techs/persons opinion of the products!! Thank YOU!!!

IMO a very difficult, but yet very important question. I am not very qualified to give a good answer. I am looking for a new or 2 new stainers also Wink I will not buy any stainers where i am tied to a certain detectionsystem. For me, with hundreds of markers an open system works best - also because the department have good knowlegde of the immunohistotechnique.

Open or "closed" system - the world split in "half" almost.

A fully automated immunostainer cant compeat with the quality of an open when there are clever people doing the work YET - IMO. Most of the closed systems give very good staings for most of the common markers, but to my knowlegde there are also problems with a few markers - they work on it tho.

If the retieval is better on the immunomachine or an other device depends on the skill and experience of the person doing the retrieval. The retrieval on the immuniomachine is sufficient for the vast majority of markers it seems.

If (Your) the lab is not advanced reg immuno or there are not any people willing to make a lot of effort learning to be a good immunotech, i would perhaps advise you to choose ventana or Leica or ?? More pricey but yet more reliable and safe if the knowlegde isnt yet there in your department.

I am considering an autostainer from labvision at the moment.

Ole
